Now that the Spring 2020 runways have officially wrapped up in New York, it’s time to start looking back at the trends that emerged along the way. Out of all the clothing, shoes and accessories, next season’s jewelry trends may just be the most fun to experiment with. Designers got playful with colorful gems, oversized statement pieces, and standalone earrings that prove sometimes the single life really is more fun.

1. Colorful Jewelry
   Forget sticking to gold and silver, designers brought on an explosion of color for Spring 2020’s jewelry. There were bright floral and beaded pieces at Ulla Johnson, gemstones at Brandon Maxwell, and mismatched colors at Marc Jacobs and Ports 1961. Channeling our inner kids, the look is all about having fun with your accessories.
2. The Single Earring
   Earrings are going solo next season. The single earring look dominated Spring 2020 runways from Prabal Gurung to Tibi and Marc Jacobs. The key to achieving this look? Go for an earring that’s statement-making enough to stand on its own.
3. Oversized Chains
   Chains got bigger and bigger on the spring runways. Brandon Maxwell sent giant sparkling versions (some complete with matching chain earrings) down his runway, while Zimmermann layered oversized chain necklaces with beaded ones.
4. Pearls
   Pearls are going strong for Spring 2020. The classic material made appearances in just about every form—from single drop earrings to layered necklaces and even on headpieces at Khaite.
5. Big Hoops
   Hoop earrings never really left, but get ready to see them multiply in size next season. Proenza sent a crop of power hoops down its runway—thick, gold, and double-hooped for extra measure, while designers like Oscar de la Renta explored the oversized look using different materials.

A necklace that wraps around your neck, a bracelet that cuffs your wrist, a ring that slips onto your finger—jewelry is generally designed in the round. And because of the value of the raw materials it’s made of, the jewelry industry is, at least to a certain extent, circular in the sustainable sense. Responsible fashion was the main talking point of the Spring 2020 season, and the use of humble, natural materials like shell, stone, raffia, and wood suggested that jewelry designers have taken all the earth-friendly talk in.
Trends in jewelry aren’t as radical as those in accessories; and the emotion evoked by a finely wrought ring, say, is different than bag or shoe lust. Instead, it awakens a sort of instinctual magpie tendency. Sparkly objects tend to have a magnetic pull, and there are plenty on offer for Spring: Prepare to sparkle from the top of your head the tips of your toes.
Indeed, full-body jewelry is a big thing this season. At Balmain and Gabriela Hearst, it was built-in; elsewhere baubles were fashioned into garments. Chokers retain their leading position and chunky links are of the moment. Plan to layer them—two or more deep—on days when you’re not wearing a lariat worn wrapped like a scarf or with the chains falling through the décolletage, as at Versace.
Earrings are sold in pairs, but you don’t need to wear them that way. The trend for mismatched and single earrings is still around; for Spring it was played with the perennial hoop earring (worn individually, mismatched, or as a pair). Finally, when designers weren’t playing ball—beads, pearls, and orbs were everywhere—they were line dancing, with the above-mentioned lariats and new iterations of dangling “art” earrings, some resembling Calder mobiles. It’ll be difficult not to fall hook, line, and sinker for them.
Back to Nature
Jewelry doesn’t need to be made of diamonds to be precious. We saw shell parures at Prada, wooden brooches at Miu Miu, raffia necklaces at Simone Rocha, and so much more. Everywhere you looked, designers were elevating humble materials into highly desirable pieces.
The Body Beautiful
Paco Rabanne was one of the first designers to blur the line between jewelry and dress; Julien Dossena, now head of the house, isn’t the only one following in his footsteps. Area, Gypsy Sport, and Kenzo took body jewelry way beyond the belly chain. For less exhibitionist types, Balenciaga and Moschino offered trompe l’oeil jewelry prints.
Feeling Hoopy
Worn in pairs or singly, hoops made the rounds in all shapes and sizes this season. Particularly effective were the versions that got an art-class makeover, like the paint-dipped hoops at Marni.
Spheres of Influence
Jewelry creators literally had a ball for Spring, suspending globes of metal and glass from ear lobes, and stringing multicolored beads into lariats. Bottega Veneta’s Daniel Lee draped pendant orbs down backs, and other designers embraced pearls—with and without irony.
Linked In
Chokers remain high on must-have lists. Bigger is better in terms of links; and more is more when it comes to piling and layering these pieces around your neck.
Twinkle Toes
There’s nothing down-to-earth about a brooch on a sock, a chandelier drop suspended from an espadrille, or delicate anklet jewelry. So kick up your heels and have some fun

In my New York Spring Summer 2020 runway coverage, I wrote that the trends we were seeing, we would most likely see again after we headed off the international runways of London, Paris and Milan.
And it happened. Each of the themes I first showed made a strong presence on all of the catwalks. (see New York Fashion Week coverage here). In addition to these trends: juxtaposing color, ultra-large link chains, a bohemian take on antique and vintage jewelry, hoops in every incarnation, modernized pearls, sea and sand inspired jewels and sculptural/tribal updates, there were also four more directions which became evident across the Atlantic.
Just like the trends we saw in New York, these are themes that have been evolving in the jewelry studios and ateliers. And, you don’t have to wait until Spring 2020 to invest in them. They are out there in different price points and styles to purchase and wear now.
Here are four international favorites:
Having A Ball
From the runway to the studios, jewelry designers continue to orbit around three dimensional round shapes. Inspired by everything from planetary spheres, magical inspired crystal balls and sparkly Christmas ornaments, these designs take shape in different interpretations, from lockets to long drop earrings to pendants and charms.
All Choked Up
Chokers are back for Spring 2020. I’m not talking about the fine delicate stackable chokers of a few seasons ago which continue to be worn layering staples. These are statement chokers –hard powerful silhouettes that curve around the neck in gold. They also translate into choker length necklaces that are strong in shape but flexible with multiple dangles accenting the entire piece.
Going Long
If you prefer a languid sexy long necklace that dips and drapes, there are myriad style lariat, bolo and elongated Y-necklaces that will provide you with the look you want. Many of these can also do double duty and get wrapped around the wrist multiple times.
The One
After seasons of seeing many studs and other styles, we are moving back to finding the one. These are available in sculptural, geometric, dangling and hoop silhouettes. But don’t let that stop your ear party. You can also keep in going on the other lobe.

Studded chokers and stacked piercings are defining the trajectory of the punk wave this season, with long, glittering rhinestone earrings, oversized chain link necklaces and neon bursts of color acting as equally tasty side dishes. We’re shining the spotlight on the definitive jewelry trends spotted on the runways of Fashion Week Fall/Winter 2019-2020 across the four corners of the fashion world.

1. Neo-Parisian
   Classic Parisian jewelry dominated the runways, with layers of gold chains, cameo rings and pearls, whether small and subtle or worn overstated, en masse. This season, there was a sense of daring in the air, which inspired bold reinventions of the Parisian staples. At Dior, the pearl necklace was embellished with rhinestones, at Givenchy, pearls were worn asymmetrically, and the anklet resurfaced in chic, fine gold.
2. Punk
   Grungy, androgynous silhouettes crossed the runways, with boxy designs and check prints evoking the rebellious spirit of the late 1970s. Jewelry was key to the look then, as it was on the runways of Fall/Winter 2019-2020, with stacks of piercings and bondage style studded chokers.
3. Statement earrings
   Earrings were strikingly long, oversized and hung with mismatched adornments, impossible to slip by unnoticed.
4. Rhinestone
   Overstated and tailor-made for the party girl, rhinestones fell in torrents from models’ lobes, swinging in time to their every step.
5. Color explosion
   Massive, neon jewelry pieces are a surefire way to add a touch of daring to a look. Sometimes with throwback pieces, like at Jacquemus, which saw oversized hoops in Noughties-style neon cross the runway, or sometimes bourgeois, as seen at Stella McCartney, with bold, curtain-like tassel earrings.
6. Logomania
   Fashion houses did not let their names go unrecognized: earrings were kissed with signatures, necklaces were stamped with logos and jewels formed tiny initials, letting designers pay homage to the heritage of the houses.
7. Oversized chain-links
   Unmissable on the runways were oversized chain-link jewels, knowingly crafted with both earrings and chokers packing force into any look they adorned.
   8 Trinkets
   With handkerchiefs at Jacquemus, watch bracelets at Loewe, trombones at Stella McCartney and mini Eiffel Towers at Balenciaga, the only common thread running through these curiosity shop jewels spotted on the runways was their unpredictability.
